Cost Avoidance Calculator Overview
The Craigmile Cost Avoidance Calculator (CCAC) is designed to estimate the annual cost of Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM)-related injuries per bed. It utilizes your facility’s workers’ compensation costs—specifically those related to SPHM incidents—along with your average daily census.

Data Points Used

• Workers’ compensation data (incurred and reserve costs specific to SPHM-related injuries)
• Lowest nationally recognized indirect cost multiplier
• Facility’s average daily census, as reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

This approach allows for meaningful comparisons across acute care facilities--provided the data submitted is accurate. For clarity on what qualifies as an SPHM-related workers’ comp injury, please see the CACC Description Page.
Industry Benchmarks (Guidelines Only)
Although current benchmarks are based on a limited dataset (18 hospitals), the following ranges offer general guidance:

• < $750 per bed: Facilities with established and successful SPHM programs
• $750 – $1,500 per bed: Facilities with SPHM programs in development
• > $1,500 per bed: Facilities with limited or no SPHM programs
